STREAKING SIENA

Siena coach Fran McCaffery will talk about almost anything related to his basketball team, save for arguably its most noteworthy accomplishment to date.

No, not the back-to-back first round NCAA Tournament wins. We are talking The Streak -- now 32 straight home wins, stretched over parts of three seasons. The Saints had to come back from a five-point halftime deficit Thursday to beat Loyola 67-61 at Times Union Center.

Siena has not lost at Times Union Center since Feb. 16, 2008, when Loyola beat the Saints 83-76 in overtime.

"What happened in the past is irrelevant," McCaffery said this week. "In terms of us trying to win a championship, obviously it's been very helpful. ... (but) we can't talk about what happened before. It doesn't matter."

But people are starting to talk. The second longest home streak in the country will spark that.

Except when the past keeps repeating itself. And three straight wins here in early March will land the Saints back in the NCAAs.

Siena's streak is second only to Kansas, which has won 53 straight games at Allen Fieldhouse. However, it should be noted that the Jayhawks have lost two games during the streak in Kansas City, Mo., 41 miles from its Lawrence, Kan., campus. (For comparative purposes, that's closer than the Glens Falls Civic Center is to the Times Union Center.)

At least McCaffery won't be asked about chasing the all-time record: Kentucky won 129 straight times at home from 1943-55.
