SCHENECTADY - Lee Aiezza of Albany survived five matches under taxing lane conditions Sunday night to win the fifth annual Joe Donato Scratch Singles bowling tournament at Sportsman's Bowl.
Aiezza, 32, qualified eighth, then worked his way through the bracket, beating Mike Rose 214-211 in the championship match to win the $4,000 top check. Rose, a 36-year-old from Rochester who won last month's Brockmyre Classic in Canandaigua, earned $2,000.
There were a record 540 entries in the 23-day tournament, from which 106 advanced to Sunday's semifinals.
